- 1 package active dry yeast
- 1/2 cup warm milk
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
- 3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Black food coloring gel
Instructions
- Activate the yeast in the warm milk with 1 teaspoon of the granulated sugar for 5 minutes until foamy.
- In a large bowl, mix the yeast mixture, melted butter, remaining sugar, and egg.
- Gradually add the flour and salt. Mix until a soft dough forms. Knead on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- While the dough rises, prepare the filling: In a small bowl, mix the softened butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon until combined.
- Punch down the risen dough. Roll it out on a lightly floured surface into a 12×18 inch rectangle.
- Spread the cinnamon-sugar mixture evenly over the dough.
- Roll the dough tightly along the long edge into a log. Cut the log into 12 equal rolls.
- Place the rolls in a greased 9×13 inch baking pan. Cover and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
- Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius).
- Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
- Prepare the glaze: Whisk together the powdered sugar, 2 tablespoons of milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Add a few drops of black food coloring gel to the glaze and mix until you achieve a dark gray or black color.
- Drizzle the spooky glaze over the warm rolls.
Notes
- For thicker rolls, use a 9×9 inch pan instead of 9×13 inches.
- You can use store-bought dough to save time.
- Use toothpicks to draw simple spiderweb designs on the glaze before it sets for extra decoration.
