Description

A straightforward baked casserole recipe perfect for breakfast or brunch.


Ingredients

  • 6 eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 pound breakfast sausage, cooked and crumbled
  • 2 cups cubed bread (stale bread works well)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, dry mustard, salt, and pepper.
  3. In the prepared baking dish, layer the cubed bread evenly.
  4. Sprinkle the cooked sausage over the bread layer.
  5. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread and sausage.
  6. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or up to 4 hours, to allow the bread to soak up the liquid.
  7. Remove the foil and sprinkle the shredded cheese over the top.
  8. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until the casserole is set and the top is lightly golden brown.
  9. Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before cutting and serving.

Notes

  • You can substitute turkey sausage for pork sausage.
  • Use any type of bread you prefer, such as white, whole wheat, or sourdough.
  • For a less rich flavor, reduce the amount of cheese to 3/4 cup.
