Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm water (105-115°F)
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 ¼ teaspoons)
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1 tablespoon butter, melted
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 2 tablespoons baking soda
  • Coarse salt, for topping

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let stand for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Stir in salt and melted butter. Gradually add flour, mixing until a shaggy dough forms.
  3. Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  6. Punch down dough and divide into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a rope about 20 inches long.
  7. Twist each rope into a pretzel shape.
  8. In a shallow dish, dissolve baking soda in 6 cups of hot water. Dip each pretzel in the baking soda solution for 30 seconds.
  9. Place pretzels on the prepared baking sheet. Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse salt.
  10. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
