Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm water (105-115°F)
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted, plus more for brushing
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let stand for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
  3. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down dough and divide into 8-10 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a rope about 10-12 inches long.
  6. Place breadsticks on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes.
  7. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  8. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
  9. While breadsticks are baking, mix melted butter, minced garlic, parsley, and Parmesan cheese (if using).
  10. Brush the warm breadsticks generously with the garlic butter mixture immediately after removing them from the oven.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, you can add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the garlic butter.
