  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar plus 1 tablespoon for yeast

  • 1 large egg
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened (for filling)
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar (for filling)
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon (for filling)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (for topping)
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Combine warm milk, yeast, and 1 tablespoon sugar in a bowl. Let stand 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Stir in the 1/4 cup sugar, melted butter, and egg into the yeast mixture.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour and salt. Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the dough. On a floured surface, roll the dough into a 12×18 inch rectangle.
  6. Spread the softened butter evenly over the dough. Mix the brown sugar and 2 tablespoons cinnamon; sprinkle this mixture over the buttered dough.
  7. Roll the dough tightly along the long edge to form a log. Cut the log into 12 equal rolls.
  8. Place the rolls in a greased 9×13 inch baking pan. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes.
  9. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
  10. Mix the topping sugar and 2 tablespoons cinnamon. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the unbaked rolls.
  11. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown. Cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • If your kitchen is cool, place the dough in an oven that is turned off but has the light on for rising.
  • For a glaze, mix 1 cup powdered sugar with 2 tablespoons milk and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract. Drizzle over warm rolls.
