A basic recipe for classic butter cookies suitable for holiday baking.

- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg yolk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
Instructions
- Beat the softened butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
- Mix in the egg yolk and vanilla extract until combined.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour and salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a dough forms. Do not overmix.
- Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and chill for at least 1 hour.
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
- Roll out the chilled dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness.
- Cut the dough into desired shapes using cookie cutters.
- Place cookies on ungreased baking sheets.
- Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
- Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
- You can decorate these cookies with simple icing or sprinkles after they cool.
- For firmer cookies, chill the cut-out shapes for 15 minutes before baking.
