Description

A recipe for making basic chocolate doughnuts at home.


Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 1 cup powdered sugar for glaze (optional)

Instructions

  1. Whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix the granulated sugar, egg, milk, and vanilla extract.
  3. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
  4. Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep pot to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius).
  5. Roll the dough out to about 1/2 inch thickness and cut out doughnut shapes using a cutter.
  6. Carefully place doughnuts into the hot oil, frying 2-3 at a time.
  7. Fry for about 1-2 minutes per side until golden brown.
  8. Remove doughnuts with a slotted spoon and place them on a wire rack lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
  9. If glazing, whisk powdered sugar with a small amount of milk or water until smooth, then dip the cooled doughnuts into the glaze.

Notes

  • For cake-style doughnuts, you can bake them instead of frying at 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius) for 10-12 minutes.
