Description

A simple baked casserole featuring bread soaked in custard and layered with blueberries.


Ingredients

  • 1 loaf (1 pound) French bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter.
  2. Arrange half of the bread cubes in a single layer in the prepared dish.
  3. Sprinkle all the blueberries evenly over the bread layer.
  4. Top with the remaining bread cubes.
  5. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and sugar until well combined.
  6. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread and blueberries in the baking dish. Press the bread down gently to absorb the liquid.
  7. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight.
  8. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius).
  9. Remove the plastic wrap. Drizzle the melted butter over the top of the casserole.
  10. Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, or until the casserole is set and lightly golden brown.
  11. Let it cool for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Serve warm with maple syrup or powdered sugar, if desired.
  • If using frozen blueberries, do not thaw them before adding to the casserole.
