Description

A straightforward recipe for a classic baked apple crisp with a crumbly topping.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 medium apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (for apples)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for apples)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar (for topping)
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius). Lightly grease an 8×8 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, toss the apple slices with 1/4 cup granulated sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice. Place the seasoned apples evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a separate medium bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar, rolled oats, and nutmeg for the topping.
  4. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. Sprinkle the topping mixture evenly over the apples in the baking dish.
  6. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender when pierced with a fork.
  7. Let the crisp cool for at least 10 minutes before serving.
